This City Connect event has been changed from a drop-in coffee discussion to a presentation showcasing the history of garbage disposal in Ames. In July, Ames residents in single-family homes and multi-family units of four or less will begin residential curbside recycling. Fifty years ago, Ames was the home of the first ever municipally operated waste-to-energy system. What has changed?

Resource Recovery Plant Superintendent Mark Peebler, along with Public Works Director Justin Clausen, will walk through what has happened over the decades to explain why a cutting-edge system in the 1970s is being replaced by a traditional recycling system.

Handling community garbage is an increasingly expensive activity. By embracing recycling, residents can reduce the amount of garbage that must be processed, transported, and landfilled. Offering residential curbside recycling is the first step in a multi-phased approach to producing less garbage.
